“Barbaroslar” is an interesting Turkish created historical series focusing on the exciting and adventurous lives of Barbarossa brothers, great naval forces in the Ottoman Empire. Based in the 1500’s, the series focuses on these sea fighters who have their distinguished footprints in the history of naval power in Mediterranean.
The plot of the story has predominantly two main characters which are Oruc Reis and Hızır Reis who is also called Barbaros Hayreddin Pasha later in the story. Oruc Reis who is presented as the elder brother, is depicted as a hero with an indomitable spirit, full of justice who has the sole aim of defending his people from the oppression by the Iranian and the Turko-Arab invaders. Hızır, the younger brother of Küçük İskender is described as a great tactician, expert swimmer, who eventually becomes one of the greatest admirals ever known.
The series also goes a long way to storytelling by painting the right background politically by depicting the geopolitical wars of the Ottoman empire, the Spanish empire and different pirate factions. With magnificent sea battles, political man oeuvres, and the heroic acts of individualism, “Barbaroslar” paints a very accurate picture of the transformation of the brothers from ordinary Bosnian knights whom people did not even take notice of to the Gothic monsters and legendary historical figures who led the Ottomans’ naval victory.
Together with beautiful costumes and moresome cinematography and an involving plot, “Barbaroslar” is not only entertaining but also informative about the rather important epoch of the sea history. The theme of brotherhood and loyalty together with the fight against oppression is undeniably attractive to the viewers who are interested in the heroic-action historical show. While Barbarossa brothers maneuver through the dangerous currents and strong opponents, the show “Barbaroslar” is the living proof of their heritage and the triumph of the Ottoman fleet.
